2017
2017 was a year of transition for APC. This report provides an overview of what APC and its network accomplished during that year.
APC’s year of transition has been a year of learning and change for all of us. We’ve had a good year, made possible by the spirit, hard work and commitment of the APC staff, the engagement of our members, the guidance of our board of directors, and the support of our partners.
Since mid-2016, the government has implemented a series of economic, social and political measures under the state of emergency enacted by Presidential Decree No. 2323, of 13 May 2016. In particular, the right of access to the internet, the right to freedom of expression and the right to privacy in Venezuela may be violated because of this Decree.
It is a week of celebration for APC, with two of our closest friends and internet pioneers joining the Internet Hall of Fame. Some feminist lovers of the internet and the Association for Progressive Communications are organising a Feminist Internet eXchange pop-up in Bangkok on 31 July 2017, following the 2017 Asia Pacific Regional Internet Governance Forum.
APC joined organisations, tech companies, universities, startups and governments from 95 countries attending the 2017 RightsCon taking place in Brussels, Belgium, on 29-31 March.
For years, the internet has had a transformative effect throughout the world. Despite the increasing curbs on freedoms and rights, APC will continue to work on promoting access to a free and open internet to improve our lives and create a more just world.
