At the Human Rights Council, APC together with the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission and the International Lesbian and Gay Association delivered a joint statement highlighting the importance of encryption and anonymity for people who face discrimination and persecution based on their sexual orientation and gender identity.
The 29th session of the Human Rights Council is taking place from 15 June to 3 July in Geneva. Internet rights will be prominent on the Council’s agenda, with the release of a number of reports relating to the internet, including a new report on encryption and anonymity by the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression.
This week the UN Human Rights Council is expected to consider establishing a Special Rapporteur on the right to privacy. The South African government has a unique opportunity to support this initiative and ensure that the right to privacy is accorded the international recognition and protection it deserves.
