The need to include community networks as a solution to access gaps in the World Summit on the Information Society follow-up and implementation process was the main focus of APC’s participation at this year’s Commission on Science and Technology for Development session.
The summit, which aims to increase collaboration between community network operators in the region and provide opportunities for engagement with other stakeholders, shows that there is a sustained and growing interest in this area.
Last week, a big step was taken in South Africa in the direction of strengthening the development of community-led and autonomous telecommunications infrastructure.
How do you connect the unconnected? Mozilla and the National Science Foundation posed this question to find innovative wireless technologies that connect people to the internet and to each other.
Masibulele Jay Siya told APCNews the story of Mankosi, a village that came together to build and maintain its own telecommunications network and offer affordable communications to the people in rural Eastern Cape.
