Fifth African School on Internet Governance to take place in Egypt

Capacity building on internet governance in Africa will take another step forward with the fifth annual African School on Internet Governance (AfriSIG 2017), taking place on 28 November to 2 December 2017 in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt.

The school, organised by the Association for Progressive Communications (APC), received an overwhelming response to its call for applications this year, which was launched shortly after AfriSIG received a World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Prize as an outstanding information and communications technology (ICT) initiative involving international and regional cooperation. A total of 40 successful applicants will form part of this year's AfriSIG class.

What does AfriSIG cover?

AfriSIG aims to build knowledge of internet governance institutions and processes, engaging people from governments, civil society, business and the technical and academic communities in shaping internet governance issues in Africa and globally.

The five-day event covers internet governance and provides an overview of the institutional landscape, as well as addressing its correlation with human rights and development, cybersecurity, multistakeholder approaches and emerging issues. The school includes a practical hands-on component, referred to as a “practicum”, which will run throughout the five days and will give participants a chance to experience a multistakeholder decision-making process in a realistic simulated environment (see the AfriSIG website and the detailed programme for more information).

Last year’s AfriSIG produced a total of 44 graduates, who joined the hundreds of alumni who are now successfully moving into the internet governance space by participating in major events at both the regional and international levels.
