In the early 1980s, before the internet as we know it existed, activists from different corners of the world were working on stand-alone systems with “human gateways”. Technicians had to travel from one part of the world to another to allow different computer systems to communicate with each other.
The open internet, freedom of expression and online civic movements are the foci of the Global Voices Citizen Media Summit that will take place in Cebu, Philippines. APC is participating with two panels and a meeting on the limits and barriers to defend human rights on the internet from a local perspective.
